An IP(7P) spoofing security vulnerability in certain midrange Sun Fire Server's firmware:

1. Impact

An IP(7P) spoofing security vulnerability in certain Mid-range Sun Fire Server's firmware may allow a remote privileged/unprivileged user to gain unauthorized access to the System Controller (SC). Such users may also gain access to the system console and possibly the host operating system running on these servers. This may allow such users to power off or reset the system which is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800/E2900/E4900/E6900/V1280
  • Netra 1280/1290 Servers
with a System Controller (SC) running ScApp versions 5.18.X, 5.19.X, and 5.20.0 through 5.20.10

To determine the version of ScApp on a system, the following command can be run (from sc0:SC>):
    sc0:SC> showsc
...
ScApp version: 5.20.10 Build_01
RTOS version: 47
...
Note: This issue only impacts systems that have a System Controller V2 without SSH enabled.

To determine if a system has System Controller V2, the following command can be run (from the platform shell):
    sc0:SC> showsc
...
Main System Controller V2
SC Failover: disabled
...
To determine if SSH is configured on the System Controller, please see the documentation regarding configuring of network parameters in the System Administration Guide for these servers.

3. Symptoms

There are no reliable symptoms that would indicate the described issues have been exploited.

4. Workaround

To work around the described issue, one of the following options can be used:
  1. Do not put the System Controller on a publicly accessible network.
  2. Enable SSH on systems with System Controller V2
Note: System Controllers can be configured to use SSH for remote connections or to not accept remote connections at all. To configure network parameters for these System Controllers, please refer to the System Administration Guide documentation for these servers.

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800/E2900/E4900/E6900/V1280 with firmware (ScApp) 5.20.11 (as delivered in patch 114527-12) or later
  • Netra 1280/1290 Servers with firmware (ScApp) 5.20.11 (as delivered in patch 114527-12) or later
