Impact
With OBP parameter settings "diag-switch?=true" and "diag-level=max" set, upgrading the OBP (Standalone Flash Update) on Sun Ultra 25 or Sun Ultra 45 systems may cause POST to hang or OBP to generate a "RED STATE Exception" error. The system may also become unbootable.
Contributing Factors
This issue can occur on the following platforms:
Note: The issue is not with the OBP binaries within these patches. The issue is caused by a bug in the Standalone Flash update "Makefile," which builds the combined Standalone Flash-Update image integrating the OBP, POST and obdiag binaries. POST is not able to run because it is not properly configured in the PROM space.
Symptoms
Should the described issue occur, POST will hang or the system may generate a RED STATE Exception error. The system may become unbootable.
Workaround
Prior to running the standalone flash update utility, set the OBP parameters "diag-switch?=false" and "diag-trigger=none". After running the standalone flash update utility, POST will not run and OBP will boot normally.
