Sun Fire T2000 With System Firmware Patch 123482-01 Will Not Allow DVD-boot or Net-boot of Solaris 10 1/06 or Solaris 10 6/06

Category :Availability
Release Phase :Resolved
Product :Sun Fire T2000 Server
Bug Id :6454051
Date of Workaround Release :21-AUG-2006
Date of Resolved Release :14-SEP-2006

Impact

Sun Fire T2000 running Solaris 10 1/06 or Solaris 10 6/06 with patch 123482-01 installed (firmware 6.2.0) will not allow DVD-boot or net-boot. Also, if the "/etc/driver_aliases" file is not edited before installation of the patch, the system will not boot off of the hard drive.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platform:

  • Sun Fire T2000 Server (running Solaris 10 1/06 or Solaris 10 6/06) with firmware 6.2.0 (as delivered in patch 123482-01) and without firmware 6.2.4 (as delivered in patch 123482-02)

Note: The Sun Fire T2000 is not supported on Solaris 8 and 9.

In the Sun System Firmware 6.2.0 release for the Sun Fire T2000, the compatibility property for the 1064 device was changed to be in accordance with the PCI Express specification, where the compatibility property should be "pciex" instead of "pci".

To determine the version of firmware on the system, the following command can be run (from the system controller CLI):

    sc> showhost
    System Firmware 6.2.0 Sun Fire[TM] T2000 2006/06/02 21:47

Symptoms

Solaris will fail to attach the driver for the 1064 device because the "pciex" alias is missing from the "/etc/driver_aliases" file and as such, no on-board hard disk drives will appear. Net-boot and DVD-boot attempts will fail.

Workaround

To work around this issue for net-boot, edit the netimage miniroot "/etc/driver_aliases" to add the following line:

    mpt "pciex1000,56"

Note: This line must also be added to the "/etc/driver_aliases" file by a postinstall script if you are using JumpStart.

For DVD-boot there is currently no file-modification relief for this issue.

If you have already installed patch 123482-01, you may choose to back out the firmware contained in patch 123482-01 from your system and downgrade (re-install 122430-03 with a reflash of the SC). This applies for either net-boot or DVD-boot.

Note: If you followed the README instructions for the "/etc/driver_aliases" workaround, and are not planning a Solaris upgrade or re-install, then there is no immediate need to downgrade your Sun system firmware. You can wait for a scheduled maintenance cycle, and either downgrade at that time, or upgrade to the next version of this patch when released.

Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following release:

  • Sun Fire T2000 Server with firmware 6.2.4 (as delivered in patch 123482-02 or later)
