Frame Manager Service LED on Sun Fire Servers 3800/4800/4810/6800 May Indicate an Errored State When No Faults Exist Within the Frame

Impact

The LED associated with the "wrench" icon may be illuminated in amber (indicating a failure), but output from the command "showplatform -p frame" shows no failures.


Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 without firmware 5.15.1 (delivered with patch 112884-02)

Use the "showsc" command to display the firmware version of the SCApp.

Note: Systems with firmware 5.14.5 and 5.15.0 are not affected by this issue.


Symptoms

1. Should the described issue occur, the following error messages on the System Controller (SC) console would look similar to the following:

    Platform.SC: [ID 987850 local2.error] Frame Manager
    monitoring is disabled, communication error
    Platform.SC: [ID 709532 local2.warning] Frame Manager connected
    ID: 0003ba:184b5b

2. The LED associated with the "wrench" icon may be illuminated indicating failure.


Workaround

To recover from the error messages described above, reboot the Frame Manager using the following steps:

  1. Turn both Rack Fan Trays off. This will cause the Frame Manager to turn off.
  2. Turn the Rack Fan Trays on again. This will reboot the Frame Manager.

Note: Components in the rack will not be affected.

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 with firmware 5.15.1 (delivered with patch 112884-02) or later.
