Date of Resolved Release :06-JUN-2003

Impact

Sun Fire Servers 3800/4800/4810/6800 with firmware 5.13.x and 5.14.0-5.14.4 and Frame Manager Service LED may display a false failure condition. The LED below the "rotating wrench" icon may light up (indicating an error condition), but output from the command "showplatform -p frame" shows no failures. The system and Frame Manager are actually working without any failure.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 with firmware revision 5.13.x
  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 with firmware revision 5.14.0-5.14.4

Symptoms

1. Should the described issue occur, error messages on the System Controller (SC) console would look similar to the following:

    Platform.SC: [ID 987850 local2.error] Frame Manager
    monitoring is disabled, communication error
    Platform.SC: [ID 709532 local2.warning] Frame Manager connected
    ID: 0003ba:184b5b

2. The LED below the "rotating wrench" icon may be lit, indicating an error condition.

Workaround

To recover from the error messages, reboot the Frame Manager using the following steps:

  1. Turn both Rack Fan Trays off. This will cause the Frame Manager to turn off. (The Frame Manager receives power from the two Rack Fan Trays.)
  2. Turn the Rack Fan Trays on again (this will reboot the Frame Manager.)

Note: Components in the rack will not be affected.

Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC

  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 with Firmware revision 5.14.5 (as delivered in patch 112883-06) or later
  • Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 with Firmware revision 5.15.0 (as delivered in patch 112884-01) or later

Note: Systems with 5.13.x firmware will require an upgrade.
