Impact

A few instances have been reported for a specific group of CPU Torque Tools supplied with Sun Fire 280R, Sun Enterprise 420R, and Sun Blade 1000/2000 systems where the plastic end cap has separated from the handle of the tool at a high speed.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Fire 280R
  • Sun Enterprise 420R
  • Sun Blade 1000
  • Sun Blade 2000

Note: A specific group of Torque Tool date codes is affected. These date codes are 12/02, 01/03, 02/03, 03/03, 04/03, 05/03, and 06/03 for part number 250-1611-02 only. To determine if a Torque Tool is affected, examine the date stamp on the round label at the end of the tool handle. Check to see if the date matches one of those above.

Symptoms

Affected Torque Tool plastic end caps may separate from the rest of the Torque Tool handle during use. The spring inside the tool handle exerts force on the cap, causing the cap to separate at high speed.

Workaround

Use a Sun Torque Tool outside of the affected date code range, or use a third party Torque Tool having a torque rating of 5.0 +/- 0.5 in/lbs (.565 Nm).

Note: The Torque Tool manufacturer recommends observing certain safety precautions when using this tool:

  • Wear safety goggles (user and bystanders).
  • Do not use a torque wrench to break fasteners loose. Broken tools can cause injury.
  • Do not use on live electrical circuits; electrical shock can cause injury.

Resolution

This issue is resolved through the implementation of a Field Change Order (FCO). Customers experiencing this issue should contact their Sun Services Representative for assistance.
