Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800, V1280 and Netra 1280 Systems with Specific Firmware Cannot Install Solaris 9 Kernel Patch 112233-08 or Later

Impact

Solaris 9 kernel patch 112233-08 or later versions of this patch will not install on Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800, Sun Fire V1280 and Netra 1280 systems having specific firmware versions. This is described in the installation instructions found in the README for patch 112233-08.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

Solaris 9 with patch 112233-08 or later on the following platforms:

• Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 without firmware version 5.15.0 (or later 5.15.x versions)
• Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 without firmware version 5.14.4 (or later 5.14.x versions)
• Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 with firmware versions 5.12.x or 5.13.x
• Sun Fire V1280 without firmware version 5.13.0013 or later
• Netra 1280 without firmware version 5.13.0013 or later

Notes:

1) Use the "showsc -v" command to display the firmware version of the System Controller.

2) A "prepatch" script runs during the installation of patch 112233-08. The script checks for firmware compatibility for the platforms mentioned in Contributing Factors and will halt the installation if incompatible firmware is detected.

Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, messages similar to the following will be displayed during patch installation:

    "The target system does not have the correct firmware that is needed
     to install this patch.  Please install firmware version 5.xx.xx 
     or greater before attempting this installation."

Note: The firmware version "5.xx.xx" will vary depending on the platform.

Workaround

There is no workaround. Please see the "Resolution" section below.

Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

• Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 with firmware version 5.15.0 (delivered with patch 112884-01) or later 5.15.x versions
• Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 with firmware version 5.14.4 (delivered with patch 112883-05) or later 5.14.x versions
• Sun Fire V1280 with firmware version 5.13.0013 (delivered with patch 113751-03) or later
• Netra 1280 with firmware version 5.13.0013 (delivered with patch 113751-03) or later

Note: Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800 systems with firmware versions 5.12.x or 5.13.x should be upgraded to 5.15.0 or later.
