On E10K SSP Server, a CPU may be Offlined due to a "CPU tick sync failed" Message

Impact

An Enterprise 10000 Server (E10K) running System Service Processor (SSP) 3.4 or 3.5 may encounter some loss of performance when a CPU is offlined as a result of the Open Boot Prom (OBP) detecting a "CPU tick sync failed" error message.


Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • SSP 3.4 (for Solaris 2.6, Solaris 7, and Solaris 8) without patch 110316-05
  • SSP 3.5 (for Solaris 7, Solaris 8, and Solaris 9) without patch 112113-02

Symptoms

Should the described issue occur, error messages similar to the following are logged to the console log file:

    <date> <system>:  CPU tick sync failed in 512 attempts! tick-diffs = 24 
    <date> <system>:  WARNING: Removing CPU# 62 from OBP.

Workaround

There is no workaround. Please see the "Resolution" section below.

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform

  • SSP 3.4 (for Solaris 2.6, Solaris 7, and Solaris 8) with patch 110316-05 or later
  • SSP 3.5 (for Solaris 7, Solaris 8, and Solaris 9) with patch 112113-02 or later
