Category :Availability
Release Phase :Resolved
Product :Sun Fire 4810 Server
Sun Fire 6800 Server
Bug Id :None
Date of Workaround Release :03-SEP-2003
Date of Resolved Release :29-OCT-2004

Impact

In rare instances, Sun Fire 4810/6800 systems may be susceptible to a thermal event due to A152 power supply capacitors that do not meet specifications. This issue is due to the assembly process of the power supplies in a specific serial number range.

The serial number range of the manufactured power supplies is:

	0042025-0119D01579 to 0042025-0130D08200

Note: The above serial number range for power supplies manufactured in the week 19, 2001 to week 30, 2001 have an estimated failure rate of 0.2%.

Power supplies outside of this range do not require replacement for this issue. In the previous version of this Sun Alert, power supplies manufactured from week 02, 2000 to week 24, 2002, had been identified as under investigation. Upon further investigation, it has been determined that the above serial number range is the affected range for this issue and not what was previously stated.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platforms:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun Fire 6800/4810 Servers

Additional information:

  • These units will have a power supply part number of 300-1459-03
  • A152 Power supply units manufactured from week 19, 2001 to week 30, 2001 may be affected by this issue (serial numbers above)
  • The power supply may be identified by physical inspection of the part number/serial number bar code label as shown below:
       Sun bar code label example below:

       0042025-0224DXXXXX
       ||||||| ||||||||||
       ||||||| ||||\\\\\\
       ||||||| |||| \\\\\\
       Vendor \\\\ ----- unique serial number identifier
       Serial#  \\\\
       Code      ---- date code - 0224 = year 2002, week 24

Symptoms

Symptoms include loss of power to all or part of the system (even with power supply redundancy) and occasionally, observable physical damage to the system.

Workaround

There is no workaround available. Please see the Resolution section below.

Resolution

Sun Microsystems is preparing an implementation plan to replace the above listed power supplies via a Field Change Order (FCO).
